DO YOU WANT TO PLAY COLLEGE ICE HOCKEY?
ABOUT COLLEGE MEN'S ICE HOCKEY RECRUITING
College men's ice hockey offers athletes the opportunity to play against high-level competition while also studying at a University. Many prospective student-athletes wonder what they can do to get noticed by College Hockey Coaches. College Hockey Coaches spend a lot of time recruiting potential student-athletes on an off the ice especially with online platforms. If you play for a competitive midget minor, midget major, junior, or high school team then you have a good chance at getting recruited to play college men's ice hockey.
To maximize your exposure and be discovered by college coaches you need to create an online recruiting profile with an NCAA verified third party. Your profile will allow college coaches to properly assess you as a prospect because it includes all the information they want to see including your recruiting video, key stats, academic level (GPA) and contact information.
WHY PLAY COLLEGE ICE HOCKEY?
Maximize your potential: Learn and apply the values that are useful in all aspects in life. College sport teaches you the importance of teamwork, leadership, goal setting, work ethic, time management, discipline and handling pressure.
Develop relationships and make connections: The network you create from your sport can open the door for many things in life including job opportunities, friendships and partnerships.
Live a healthier lifestyle: Regular exercise helps boost immunity and contributes to overall physical health.
MEN'S ICE HOCKEY SCHOLARSHIP STATISTICS
The following table numerically summarizes the availability of men's ice hockey scholarships across the United States. Note: This shows the number of maximum scholarships a college can provide. This is called “fully funded”. However, many colleges do not have the maximum and therefore the number of total scholarships can be less than shown in the table. Athletic scholarships at colleges change yearly with increases and decreases, so you cannot fully determine who has available scholarships except by joining a network like ImRecruitable where you can find out directly what is available from the coaches.
HOW TO MAKE A ICE HOCKEY RECRUITING VIDEO
Knowing what to include attracting a coach’s attention is important. We have listed some guidelines to follow when filming your highlight video:
Hockey skills video by position:
Forward: Demonstrate the ability to skate forward and backward with strong stick handling skills. Highlight good puck control when receiving and passing the puck and progressing toward the goal. Show ability to shoot the puck with power and accuracy, using proper technique in following through.
Defense: Highlight physical positioning when challenging offensive players, as well as the ability to skate backward and forward efficiently. Demonstrate good stick handling skills and stick possession on puck. Highlight good puck control when gaining possession and clearing the puck from the defensive zone.
Goalie: Showcase the athlete’s goalie style (hybrid, stand-up, butterfly) and skating edge work with lateral movements. Demonstrate strong positioning, aggressiveness, glove positioning in the crease and playing the puck outside the crease. Include footage making various types of saves and controlling rebound. Because an above-ice view is not always the best way to capture these skills, goalies should consider shooting both skills footage and competition footage to include in a recruiting video.
How long should a ice hockey recruiting video be?
Hockey recruits should keep highlight videos between three to four-minutes long. This timeframe allows for roughly 20-30 clips from varsity competitions.
